Lets JAM!

Next Thursday the 27th at 10am we will be participating in the JAM World Record! Here is a link for you! I have taught the routine to several third graders. These students will be going to the classrooms to model the routine for the other students. It is easy and fun. Mr. Mehigan's class and Mrs. McPhail's class are the two classes that have learned the routine.

Morning Activity Time or Rosy Cheeks!

We have added some time in the morning for increased activity. Information will go home at some point before Monday as we plan to continue this initiative for grades 1&2.

K will be phased in soon and 3rd is being discussed now. I am so excited to see the students running and playing in the morning before school!

Don't forget open house tonight!

I look forward to seeing you all at tonight's open house. Remember that for this event, it is adults only. :)

This week the third grade health topic is Healthy Hearts. The students are enjoying the discussion on ways to keep our hearts healthy and why exercise is so important.

Some grades are a week behind so don't worry if the topic doesn't seem to ring with your child. The essential question for some second/third graders this week is about soccer... we are talking about 'drag-backs'. Why and when do we use a drag back in a soccer game?

Kindergarten has been playing messy backyard and we are talking about stepping with our opposite foot.

First grade is working on dribbling and trapping in soccer.

This week, first graders are playing the Bowling For Healthy Snacks game, which opens a discussion on healthy eating habits and using the food pyramid. Grades 2 and 3 will continue on next week with a  worksheet on healthy hearts! A sample question from the worksheet is:

'This is what I think; I think that.."
(circle one)     standing still        walking      hopping      jumping
will make my heart beat faster.

Then they will have to find out for themselves with a partner worksheet.

Happy Wednesday!

Week of September 10-14th

Happy Monday!

This week I am helping the kindergarten classes become acclimated to the space in the gym. We are learning how to do relays and playing a tag game called Freedom Ball. Besides having fun running all over the place, students are encouraged to help others with the freedom ball and to be polite in handing the ball to their classmates.

Grade 1 -3 are working on soccer skills. We start off with dribbling and trapping the ball. Working on ball control is a major theme.

Have a great week and don't forget to send your child to school with proper attire and sneakers on gym day! No crocs or flops! :)

The second grade curriculum health topic for this week is 'stranger danger'.

This topic has been covered in classroom curriculum and this was meant to supplement that. We talked briefly about what that term means and then I read some stranger safety situations. When the students heard a situation that they shouldn't do, I had them stomp their feet. When they heard a situation that they should do, I had them either stand up and jump, or some sort of activity. Here are a few of the situations I read to them...

You should always stick with a buddy...
You should get into a stranger's car...
You should open a door to a stranger...

The third grade health topic was 'looking cool'. We talked about what it means to use the word 'cool'. I read a story out of the WOW third grade text. We then discussed the main characters in the story and how they were alike and how they were different or unique. The main idea of the story was how we celebrate people's differences.

Enjoy the weekend and see next week in PE!
